SIMON WHITLOCK dumped Michael van Gerwen OUT of the Betfred World Matchplay in the biggest shock of the tournament so far.
The Wizard of Oz raced into a 5-0 lead to stun the World No.1 who never managed to rediscover his composure.
MVG was simply not at the races and his finishing was way off his usual devastating standard in the Marshall Arena.
But for Whitlock it was sheer elation as he went on to wrap up a comfortable 11-4 win and set up a quarter-final with Gary Anderson.
He said: “It was OK, I don’t know what to say really. I’ve been practising really well, just goes to show what I can actually do.
“I’ve been playing online tournaments and I was very confident going into this match.
“Michael didn’t play his normal match I know that, but I took full advantage of his poor form today.
But it’s just one match at a time.
“It’s Gary next and I’ll just try and play the same. Gary won convincingly tonight and played really well. Who knows what’s going to happen!”
