Exclusive! MVG: People Write Me Off Too Quickly.

MIGHTY Michael van Gerwen returns to the oche vowing that he’s now hungrier than ever and gunning for Peter Wright’s world title.

The World No.1 is lined up to take part in the first Hannover Drive-in Darts Gala tomorrow night (Weds) which includes Dutch foe Raymond van Barneveld, German star Max Hopp and South African Devon Petersen.

It will be a four-hour open-air exhibition event with German families watching from the safety of their own cars or vans. Bizarrely, some VIP punters can pay for the darts aces to wash their windscreens – including MVG.

But the dynamic Dutchman, who became a father for the second time in early April, has only really got his mind set on wiping out Scot Wright’s world title mantle.

He said:

“I’ve never been home for more than 10 days and now I’ve been home for three months.

“It’s all good the baby goes to sleep at 9pm and wakes up at a good time and I’m a pro at the nappy changing!

“I play in Hannover in a big car park and on stage. I’m looking forward to it, it’s a bit of fun and bunter. It’s good to start again.

“I will be ready, don’t worry. The most thing that I noticed about this lockdown, I have not played for 100 days now, that I’ve actually missed it. I missed performing, I missed showing everyone in the world what I am capable of.

“That’s good news for me. That means I still love what I do and it makes me hungry for more. Good luck to the rest!

“I don’t think I can complain before lockdown, I won the UK Open. People write me off too quickly, I know myself what I am capable of.

“You just need to keep testing yourself, that’s what you have to do.

“Keep believing in yourself, keep fighting for yourself, get the right balance with private life and business-wise, everything together. If that’s perfect then go for it.”

Wright, who beat MVG at the Ally Pally on New Year’s Day, has hardly had a chance to enjoy being announced as World Champ due to the corona lockdown.

Van Gerwen added: “He’s only got a few months left and then that’s gone as well! He worked hard for it, simple.

“I can only blame myself because I lost to him in the final.
