MvG to spoil birthday boy Barney’s party
With just five more weeks to go until the 2017 Premier League Darts play-offs at London’s O2 Arena, there is still plenty to play for as the eight remaining stars ready themselves for another intriguing night in Belfast.
The Northern Irish crowd will be treated to a battle of Dutch titans Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld, who turns 50 on the night, later in the evening, while the mighty Phil Taylor takes on Gary Anderson too.
Taylor and Dave Chisnall play twice at the SSE Arena, while just four points separate the top six in the table.
Read on for Darts World’s match-by-match Premier League Week 12 preview, in order of play…
Dave Chisnall v Adrian Lewis
Jackpot was unable to capitalise on his win and throwing a nine-darter against Raymond van Barneveld last week, as he went down to in-form Daryl Gurney in the first round of the 2017 German Darts Masters over Easter.
However, back in the Premier League, he still has a great chance of making the play-offs, being just a point behind third and fourth – with a match in hand.
Lewis may be five points ahead of eighth-placed Chisnall, but the duo are very close in terms of overall head-to-heads.
Chizzy is 14-12 up on Jackpot, with one draw, and has won four of their last six duels – despite losing both this year.
Merseysider Chisnall also claimed a draw last time out in the PL on his home patch Liverpool against Anderson, so this could be another close call.
Phil Taylor v Gary Anderson
The first of two ‘super duels’ in Belfast, six-time Premier League winner Taylor takes on twice champion Anderson.
Neither have been at their best this campaign, losing three apiece, but are still well in contention of finishing in the play-offs.
Anderson is up in third after gaining three points from two fixtures last week, but The Power can surge above him with victory being just a point behind with a match in hand.
The duo drew last time they played, and that may well be the result again.
Peter Wright v James Wade
Snakebite and The Machine are exactly level on 14 wins apiece against the other, but there has been a noticeable gulf in performance and consistency between the two over the past year or so.
Wright has now beaten Wade in each of their last eight meetings, and their previous three Premier League tussles.
On top of that, the Scotsman is way up in second in the table and five points above the 2009 champion.
Recent 2017 UK Open winner Snakebite is without a legitimate win in four PL fixtures – not counting his 7-0 defeat triumph over the absent Kim Huybrechts in Week 9 – but should be able to see off Wade again.
Michael van Gerwen v Raymond van Barneveld
One of the major darting duels, Dutch giants MvG and RvB lock horns for their 46th official meeting.
World number one and title holder Van Gerwen may have had the better of Birthday boy Barney overall, but the five-time world champion has made a habit of troubling his younger compatriot numerous times over the years.
Their most recent battle came on Monday in the German Darts Masters quarter-finals in a thrilling affair, but eventual champion Mighty Mike got the better of Van Barneveld in Jena.
Barney shocked Van Gerwen earlier in the PL this campaign 7-5, but may just come up just short on this occasion – even on his 50th birthday!
Dave Chisnall v Phil Taylor
Last onto the Belfast oche in Week 12 is Chisnall and Taylor.
If The Power won’t already be back in the play-offs after his match against Anderson earlier in the night, he should be after this.
Chizzy has only managed to beat Taylor in eight of their 31 total head-to-heads, while has lost their previous four – two of which were in this competition.
The Power won 7-3 earlier this season in Newcastle, and will look to achieve a similar scoreline in his favour once more.
