Gerwyn Price came from behind to win Players Championship 17 on Tuesday in defeating Devon Petersen 8-7 in the final despite being 7-4 down and surviving match darts.
Welsh Ace Price began the day with a 6-1 win over fellow Welshman Nick Kenny before back to back 6-4 wins over Martin Schindler and PC15 Winner Damon Heta saw him book his spot in the Last 16. At that stage, he whitewashed Ryan Murray 6-0 before following it up with a 6-4 win over Monday’s beaten finalist Mensur Suljovic to book his spot in the Semi Finals. At that stage, he defeated Ryan Searle, a winner of a Pro Tour Event back in February, 7-2 with his highest average of the day (105.8) to book his spot in the final against Petersen.
The final was a tight affair to start off with as the pair held throw for the first 5 legs before Petersen broke Price’s throw in the 6th with a 13 darter. Following that, there were 6 straight holds of throw as Petersen then began the 13th leg by throwing for the title. 1 dart missed at double 16 from Petersen allowed Price back in to take the leg in 14 darts and then threw to send the match to a decider. Again, Petersen squanded 3 match darts and Price came in and took the game to a deciding leg. In the decider, Price took control and left tops after 12 with Petersen back on 265. Price took it out on double 10 for a 14 darter to pick up a 3rd title of the year and a 12th of his PDC Career.
Petersen, who had reached 3 ranking Semi Finals previously in 2020 and one being just 3 days prior, began the day with a 6-2 win over 3 time major winner Robert Thornton before his only other last leg decider of the day in defeating Joe Murnan 6-5. At the Last 32 stage, he took on World Number 1 Michael Van Gerwen and he destroyed the Dutchman 6-0 with an average of 101.3 to send MVG packing and record arguably one of the biggest wins of his career. In the last 16, he defeated Jermaine Wattimena 6-3 before recording his highest average of the day in the Quarter Finals in defeating Nathan Aspinall 6-2 with a 110 average. The Semi Finals came, and he took on his good mate Joe Cullen and he dispatched the man from Bradford 7-2 to book his spot in a 1st PDC Final. Unable to take the title, but plenty of positives going into the final day of the Autumn Series and for the rest of 2020. The run to the final also sees Petersen move back into the World’s Top 50.
There were quarter runs for Derk Telnekes and Ross Smith as well as a last 16 run for World Champion Peter Wright, who lost to Cullen despite averaging over 106.
Early exits for the likes of Ian White, Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney, Dave Chisnall and Adrian Lewis. Also, there was a perfect leg hit by James Wade in his 1st Round match as he went on to make the Last 16.
The Autumn Series concludes on Wednesday with Players Championship 18 as players look to secure places at the World Grand Prix and booster their chances of qualifying for the Players Championship Finals and The World Championship.
