RONNIE BAXTER and Denis Ovens opened their accounts for 2005 with victories at the Eastbourne International Festival.

Baxter tasted victory in the JP 128 Plus Open before Ovens followed up his quarter-final appearance at the World Championships with triumph in the John Smiths Open.

Baxter enjoyed a great run of form on the floor in the second half and included Richie Burnett and Wayne Mardle among his scalps before defeating Wayne Jones 5-1 in the final of the weekend’s opening tournament.  Jones showed that he will be a force this year with defeats of Steve Coote, UK Open regional qualifiers winner Steve Hine, Tom Wilson and Terry Jenkins, who had himself ended in-form Mark Dudbridge’s hopes.

In the weekend’s other major event, Ovens won through to triumph 2-1 against Peter Wright in the final of the John Smiths Open.

Ovens, buoyed by his success at Purfleet and a quarter-final appearance in the 128 Plus Open, made it through to the last four with wins against Mark Walsh and Wes Newton, with John Clark being brushed aside in the semi-finals.

The Hertfordshire star lost the opening set in the final but fought back in style to take the title.  Both Wright and Clark can be proud of their efforts in making the last four, while Keith Deller also made the semi-finals after wins over Alex Roy and Steve Beaton.
