King of Eastbourne

Roland Scholten (Holland) was on a roll at the recent Eastbourne Open, winning both the John Smith’s Open and the 128 Open.   In the John Smith’s final against Al Hedman (Essex), it was best of three sets (5x501).   Roland put forward a brilliant display of darts taking the first set 3-0 in 13, 16 and 17 darts and going on to take the next set 3-1 with winning legs of 15, 15 and 15. Included in this winning combination were 3 maximums and 117 and 96 check-outs.  Average – 31.24.   His previous semi-final game had been against Alan Caves (London) winning 3-1 (28.79av).

In the 128 Open, Roland was up against crowd favourite Ronnie Baxter in a best of 9 leg 501 game.   Ronnie looked strong taking the first leg in 18 darts with a 118 finish.  However, the laid back Holland player replied to this by taking the next five legs in 17, 17, 12 (with a 167 gs), 19 and 19 to win the event.   Both players scored maximums.  Averages 28.70 for Roland and a 26.82 for Ronnie.

Anthony Hopkins took a 3-0 (23.48av) win in the Britvic Youth Final beating last year’s winner, Michael Hammond (Sussex).

The Britvic Ladies Final always looked to be a good final between Dawn Standley (Norfolk) and Crissy Howatt (Cumbria).  Dawn took the first leg in 18 darts with a cracking 105 check-out and allowed Crissy only one leg and took the match 3-1 (26.44 av).

In the Mens Singles Final Mark Cox from Wiltshire seemed determined not to stay too long on stage and took a swift 3-0 win from Kent’s Russ Herbert for a 27.83av.

It was the same story in the Doubles Final – Andy Jenkins paired with Kevin Painter breezed through their game against Graham Skipp and Trevor Elmer (Hants), winning the match 3-0 in 19, 15 and 14 darts (31.13av).   The Hants pair showed an average of 21.29.

Steve Randy (John Smiths) and Ron Cousins (Eastbourne Council) were on hand to present prizes to the winners.  Ron Cousins is retiring later in the year after being a regular ‘face’ at the Eastbourne Open over the years. It was obviously a nostalgic moment for him when it was announced that this would be his last presentation.   JR Darts’ hard working Hayley and David Barber took on a new role this year when, after keeping the audience in touch with the matches on the electronic board and scorer, they were there to help with the presentation – a job normally carried out by John and Pauline Raby.
